It is incredibly exciting to be a young documentary filmmaker during this golden age of documentary productions. The medium seems to have gone from being a homework assignment to a binge worthy genre, and I could not be more happy about it. Yet, I cannot help but see that for the most part it is the subject matter itself that draws the line between a "good" documentary and a bad one, and not the art of story telling itself. A good story is a good story of course, but that does not necessarily make a good film. How you tell that story, the way in which you structure your argument, is in my opinion what separates the greatest films ever made from the forgettable ones.
